Early Years

Grades 1 & 2

The early primary years are filled with discovery, imagination, and growing confidence. In a nurturing and joyful environment, children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, build connections, and develop a lifelong love for learning.

Our Approach to Teaching

A joyful engagement with learning

Teaching in Grades 1 and 2 is designed to nurture a joyful engagement with learning while strengthening the foundational skills essential for young learners. A strong emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy, helping children build confidence, independence and the habits of mind that support meaningful learning.

Language development is fostered through a phonics programme initially which gradually transitions into a whole-language approach to reading. Our Reading Programme nurtures a love for books while developing vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking and communication skills. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are meaningfully integrated, allowing language to be experienced as authentic, purposeful and connected to real-life contexts.

Learning experiences across curricular and co-curricular areas are thoughtfully designed to promote inquiry, creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. Through hands-on activities, educational games, creative expression, sports and collaborative projects, educators create engaging opportunities for children to explore, discover and grow.

Mentoring forms an integral part of the programme, with a strong focus on emotional well-being, confidence-building and the development of self-worth within a nurturing and responsive environment.

Children in Grades 1 and 2 learn through active participation, exploration and meaningful experiences. Learning is engaging, collaborative and inquiry-driven, encouraging students to ask questions, make connections and think independently. Curiosity, confidence and self-direction are nurtured so that children grow into enthusiastic and capable learners.

Through reading, discussion, play, creative expression, sports and project-based experiences, children develop resilience, adaptability, teamwork and problem-solving skills. They learn to communicate with clarity, engage deeply with ideas and appreciate diverse perspectives. Within a caring environment grounded in the school's core values of Sensitivity, Integrity, Pride in One's Heritage and the Pursuit of Excellence, children develop the confidence and character needed to thrive as thoughtful, balanced and compassionate individuals.

Together, these experiences lay the foundation for lifelong learning, where every child is encouraged to discover their strengths, pursue their interests and flourish in their own unique way.
